Our trip in the late summer of 1980 was our first trip to a European country. We took Linda's parents along with us for the two weeks and spent about half of our time looking at the areas where two of Linda's grandparents had been born. We arranged the trip on our own and boldly set off from the Copenhagen airport with only our luggage and a copy of the Frommer guide, Scandinavia on $15 & $20 a Day.
After crossing the Atlantic and landing early in the morning at Copenhagen, Denmark, we boarded the ferry for a short fifteen-mile trip across to Malmo on the very Southern tip of Sweden. A quick check-in at a hotel listed in the guide book left us with an entire day to see the sights of Malmo. We soon boarded a city tour bus and within a half-hour, all four of us were dozing soundly as we came to understand the concept of jet-lag.
Our next day began with an early morning train ride of about three hundred and fifty miles Northeast to Stockholm on the Eastern coast of Sweden.

Stockholm is a worthy tourist destination on its own. Two major buildings to see are the Royal Palace and the Parliament. With over 600 rooms and much of the construction dating from the 1700s, this is one of the world's grand palaces.
