Christmas Letter 2024
Season’s Greetings from the Sawyers
In January, we returned to Egypt for our usual
break from Minnesota’s winter. We arrived in Cairo where
temperatures are typically in the mid-60s during January.
We finally were able to visit a small part of the new and much-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum as part of their trial run. A larger part is now open and we look forward to seeing that when we return next month.
Our major outing in Egypt for the year was a road trip to a number of ancient monuments near Minya, about 150 miles south of Cairo. Minya is a 50% Coptic Christian area and we stayed at the Holy Family Hotel near a Christian church dating from 328 A.D.
In June, Linda and her friend, Iris, flew to Peru. The first stop was Cusco where they took daily excursions to various archaeological sites. They saw crop circles, terraced mountainsides and participated in a ceremony thanking the earth led by a shaman. Of course, they spent an entire day climbing around the 15th century Machu Picchu. They dined with locals and tried many Peruvian dishes, including guinea pig.
They completed their trip with three days in Lima where the highlight was a food tour with a local guide. But it was more than just food. They were guided to several sights, stopping every hour or so at restaurants and food stalls to try Peruvian delicacies.
Early autumn found us on a driving trip through Eastern Canada. Before we entered Canada at Sault Ste Marie, we visited the National Railroad Museum near Green Bay, Wisconsin. Our destination was the Canadian capital, Ottawa, where we visited numerous sites in this attractive city. On our return trip we drove through the Algonquin Provincial Park which was just beginning to display beautiful autumn colors.
After 45 years of summer visits to Northern Wisconsin, we decided to sell our lake cabin so Tom spent a good bit of time this year preparing the place. He, Linda and Terry cleaned out quite an accumulation of items.
